Log Cabin Republicans endorse Mitt Romney

Chicago, IL - The Log Cabin Republicans announced Tuesday that they have endorsed Mitt Romney for president, after what a press release called "careful consideration and consultation with our members and chapters."

The LGBT organization makes the choice despite Romney's staunch support for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as between a man and a woman and says states don't have to recognize same-sex marriage.

"The decision to endorse is the right one for our members, our community, and for the nation as a whole," said Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director, R. Clarke Cooper. "Despite our disagreement with Governor Romney on the issue of marriage, on balance it is clear that in today's economic climate, concern for the future of our country must be the highest priority."

As a presidential candidate, Romney signed the National Organization for Marriage's (NOM) 5-point pledge to support a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court, appoint judges and an attorney general who will "respect the original meaning of the Constitution," appoint a presidential commission to investigate the "harassment of traditional marriage supporters," and back legislation that would allow a ballot question on the issue for voters of the District of Columbia.

In their press release, the Log Cabin Republicans made the case that the economy, jobs and the national debt outweighs issues such as LGBT equality.
