Chicago, IL -
An extreme heat warning for Cook County and most of the Chicagoland area continues through Friday night as temperatures are expected to hit 100 degrees for the third day in a row.
Today's high temperature is expected to hit between 100 and 105 degrees with a heat index between 105 and 115. The record is 99 degrees, set in 1988.
The National Weather Service reminds people to remain alert to the signs of heat exhaustion during the continued heat wave as heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year.
The city will have all six neighborhood cooling centers open Friday.
The Center on Halsted, Chicago's LGBT community center located at 3656 N. Halsted, will be open today from 8 a.m. – 10 p.m. CoH offers free wi-fi access in the air-conditioned lobby for those looking to cool down from today's extreme heat.
The Center also offers a number of programs and events throughout the day. Check centeronhalsted.org for a complete list of activities.
