Here's the story,
Of a man named Brady,
Who was gay but didn’t show it on the show.
He was one man, Living in the closet.
And he was all alone.
Finally, the 4 disc DVD set we’ve all been waiting for—The Brady Bunch: The Complete First Season. Available this month, the DVD set features all original 25 episodes from the 1969-1970 season.
Lest you’ve forgotten, the story of the Brady Bunch goes something like this: there’s this widower with three sons, and a widow with three golden-haired daughters and they get married, hire a kooky ol’ maid, build a doghouse for their beloved Tiger, and set up house in modern late 60’s suburbia where good-natured hilarity ensues. That’s the premise.
But it was a total shock, the kinds of troubles this family endured over the next few years. From lost lockets to lost popularity contests at school; losing little Cindy in the desert to losing Carol’s voice right before the Christmas pageant; from losing Tiger to losing Alice’s services because she felt unwanted… it’s all here.
Season One episodes include: “The Honeymoon,” “Dear Libby,” “Eenie, Meenie, Mommy, Daddy,” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Katchoo,” “A Clubhouse is Not a Home,” “Kitty Karry-All is Missing,” “A-Camping We Will Go,” “Sorry, Right Number,” “Every Boy Does It Once,” “Vote for Brady,” “The Voice of Christmas,” “Is There a Doctor in the House?” “Father of theYear,” “54-40 and Fight,” “Mike’s Horror-Scope,” “The Undergraduate,” “Tiger, Tiger!” “The Big Sprain,” “Brace Yourself,” “The Hero,” “The Possible Dream,” “To Move or Not to Move,” “The Grass is Always Greener,” and “Lost Locket, Found Locket.”
Truly, this set contains some of the best, most memorable Brady episodes.
Special features on the DVD include a commentary on the pilot episode by Sherwood Schwartz, the shows creator and executive producer; commentaries on “A Camping We Will Go” and “The Hero” by cast members Barry Williams (Greg), Christopher Knight (who turned into a total hottie and is now dating the first America’s Next Top Model winner, Adrienne Curry… see them both on VH-1’s Surreal Life) and Susan Olsen (Cindy). The DVD also includes a featurette entitled, “The Brady Bunch: Coming Together Under One Roof.”
Wait a minute—“Coming Together Under One Roof?” And did you see the episode 10 title, “Every Boy Does It Once?” Or how about “The Grass is Always Greener” and “To Move or Not to Move?” I swear, there were some repressed writers on the show. Either that, or our beloved American vernacular has morphed into something much more lude than it was forty years ago.
I’ll tell you what, though, watching the Brady episodes as an adult—knowing what I know now but didn’t know as a kid—is pure joy. A joy you shouldn’t deny yourself. Be sure to grab a copy of Paramount Home Entertainment’s full screen format, Dolby Digital English Mono, closed-captioned, 40 hour, 4 disc DVD of the Brady’s classic first season—The Brady Bunch: The Complete First.
