The Chicago Department of Health (CDPH) Friday released its citywide LGBT Community Action Plan as part of the city's "Healthy Chicago" initiative.
The published document, which outlined health disparities among LGBT people, was presented in a meeting Friday with elected officials and service providers, reported the Windy City Times. The initiative included 22 strategies for combating those disparities.
"We still have a long way to go, but this is a step in the right direction," said Alderman Tom Tunney (44th Ward).
According to the CDPH, prevalence of smoking, lack of culturally competent medical care, hate violence against transgender people, HIV and obesity are among the most pressing health issues facing LGBT Chicagoans.
The plan recommends training for healthcare providers in LGBT health issues including the need for the collection of sexual orientation data in electronic medical records.
The need to combat bullying, educating landlords and employers about HIV and improvement in tracking hate crimes against transgender persons was also addressed.
