Bruce Benderson, a New York-based writer has been awarded the Prix de Flore for "Autobiographie Erotique".
The prize was awarded by the famed Cafe de Flore, the Paris hangout where Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, and a host other writers hung out.
The Cafe annually chooses the book it believes to be the most noteworthy of the year. The prize includes $8,000.
Benderson, who is openly gay and has two previous novels to his name, also works as a translator for prominent French writers and as a literature lecturer in US universities.
"Autobiographie Erotique" so far has been published only in France.
The book is an account of Benderson's nine-month relationship with a man in Romania and his experiences in the country, interwoven with various historical figures and references.
In a recent interview Benderson called the book an erotic-noir "journal".
