Chicago, IL - Chicago will receive nearly $1 million in federal grant funding for HIV testing and treatment, which will be available for community mental health and substance abuse centers throughout the city.

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) Sunday announced the grant, which is for $933.3 thousand and made available by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration.

"Community Mental Health Centers provide the large majority of mental health services in Chicago. Incorporating HIV testing and treatment in these settings is a critical step in enhancing our overall infrastructure," said CDPH Commissioner Bechara Choucair.

The federal grant is designed to help community mental health and substance abuse centers expand services, including routine testing and counseling for HIV.

The efforts are part of Healthy Chicago, the city's health plan announced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Commissioner Choucair last year.

The formal Request for Proposals (RFP) will be launched Monday. Applications for the federal funding is due on Friday, February 17, 2012.
