After 35 years, Gay Chicago ceases weekly publication in favor of biweekly schedule

Chicago, IL - Citing the rising costs of printing and the general state of the economy, gay entertainment weekly Gay Chicago announced Wednesday that as of Sept. 21 the publication will become biweekly.

Gay Chicago, which had previously published weekly, replaced Gay Chicago Magazine in March 2011 when the publication reorganized as Gay Chicago Foundation, an Illinois not-for-profit.

The former Gay Chicago Magazine was founded in 1976 by the late Ralph Paul Gernhardt and was published by Gernhardt Publications for more than 35 years.

Gernhardt died in 2006 of lung cancer, leaving the publication to his son Craig Gernhardt.

Wednesday's announcement was made by Managing Publisher Dane Tidwell, who indicated the staff would continue to improve the print publication while also posting stories online. Gernhardt remains with the paper.

With Gay Chicago cutting its print schedule, Windy City Times becomes Chicago's only remaining weekly LGBT publication and newspaper. The Times, which is published by Tracy Baim, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010.

Gay Chicago joins Grab Magazine, Boi Magazine and Nightspots Magazine in a biweekly printing schedule.
