New York City - Now that gay marriage is legal in New York, actor Neil Patrick Harris announced that he and partner David Burka are planning to get married.

The 38-year-old star tweeted his intentions on Saturday.

"David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."

The star of CBS' How I Met Your Mother has been active on Twitter.

Before the New York state senate voted on Friday, he tweeted, ""Please, New York Senate, vote in favor of marriage equality today. My family would really appreciate it."

Harris and Burtka are the parents of fraternal twins from a surrogate.

After the gay marriage legislation passed and was signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Harris tweeted, "It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!"

As Harris indicated, a date for the nuptials has not been set.

On Friday, New York became the sixth state, and by far the largest, where marriage equality will be extended to all people regardless of sexual orientation.

Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa and Washington, D.C. allow same-sex marriage.
