sen. scott brown (r-ma)
Illinois’ Mark Kirk yet to decide
Washington, DC -
Massachusetts freshman Scott Brown (R), elected to fill the seat left vacant by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D), today said he will support repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) following hearings and review of the Pentagon's study on the issue.
Brown today issued a statement: "I accept the findings of the report and support repeal based on the Secretary's (Defense Secretary Robert Gates) recommendations that repeal will be implemented only when the battle effectiveness of the forces is assured and proper preparations have been completed."
"We welcome Senator Brown's comments supporting the repeal of ‘Don't Ask' and the findings of the Pentagon report which showed 92% of service members are just fine working with their gay, lesbian, and bisexual colleagues," said Aubrey Sarvis, Army veteran and executive director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network."
Several other Republican senators appear to be ready to go against repeal opponent Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), which could provide enough votes to allow passage if Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) can effectively orchestrate floor procedures.
Newly elected Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk (R) has yet to announce his position. You can call his office at 202-224-2854 with your opinion.
