'It’s always great to see the creativity that people bring.'

The annual Bonnet Decorating Event was held Saturday, April 8, at Sidetrack – a fundraiser for the Windy City Cycling Club.

Customers could purchase a spring hat and then decorate it with a plethora of cute spring items, including peeps flowers, toys, tinsel, ribbons and bows.

“It’s always great to see the creativity that people bring,” said Sidetrack general manager Brad Balof. “It was exciting (seeing) people creating something with their own hands.”

The bonnet decorating event was a yearly staple prior to the pandemic. “We are so happy to have it back in full swing,” Balof said.

One of the highlights this year was a bonnet with a giant martini, complete with liquid and floating fruit.

Sidetrack will have a Musical Monday Cabaret with the cast of Aladdin in the coming months, as well as its annual Mother’s Day event with PFLAG participants from the Chicagoland area. “We are also gearing up for a huge Memorial Day weekend set of events,” Balof added.

And then it’s Pride Month, culminating June 25 with the annual Chicago Pride Parade.

“Pride this year will be a very important time to re-establish our connection as a community and come together to remember that our freedoms are not free,” Balof said. “In many parts of the country, LGBTQ+ Americans are the targets of systematic oppression and forces are poising themselves to strip away the rights we fought for over 70 years to obtain.”
