Sounds from a Big Room

THIS IS NOT A TEST!!! Well, it’s been a while since my last column and I’m writing one last time to let you know that I am stepping down from the Music Editor position for this site due to professional considerations. I accepted this role at a time when I was undergoing major changes in my professional life and have not been able to devote an appropriate amount time to this column. In the constantly evolving world of dance music, fresh content is vital to keep abreast of news in the music industry and my current schedule doesn’t allow me sufficient time to do justice to this column on a regular basis. As I focus more attention to traveling for events and spending time in the production studio later this year, I’ll continue to contribute to the site by providing music reviews and interviews to the new Music Editor….

DJ Plez!!! You may know this Chicago DJ from his weekly residencies at Cell Block (Sundays) and Ezuli (Mondays). It was easy to recommend him for the position based on the professionalism and dedication that he shows with his music career. He accepted the position with great enthusiasm and will be a perfect match for this column (see his interview with SUSAN MORABITO for a sample of things to come). Join me in welcoming him!

Thanks to Steve Long for his patience and understanding and DJ Chris Eterno for his advice, contributions and friendship. A special note of appreciation goes to the promoters who have provided invaluable assistance in generating rich content in the past few months, especially Derek at Star 69 Records, Martha at Fly-Life Music and Len at Project Publicity.

As for this column, let’s turn our focus to the upcoming events at FIREBALL. First up, I’ll be lighting the torch for Fireball weekend as the first DJ, starting off the evening at the classic Aragon Ballroom on Friday, February 13th. After I warm up the crowd, TRACY YOUNG will take over the decks and ignite the energy for the weekend. Also featured will be the final Fireball performance by CIRCUITMOM, which is sure to be an amazing production. Afterwards, be sure to join DJ Plez as he brings you sounds from the Oasis Lounge at the Renaissance Hotel.

On Saturday, February 14th, the dynamic duo returns! Everyone is still abuzz about the spectacular performance delivered by ROSABEL at the Aragon last year. Moving to Finkl Steel Mill this year, Ralphi Rosario and ABEL will provide another night of surprises, premiering many tracks that they just finished in the studio. Featured performer will be KEVIN AVIANCE who will lend his NY style for a special performance of new tracks from his recent album.

Turning to Sunday, this year’s line-up shows the great strides that female DJs have made in recent years by featuring three of the top female DJs on the scene. First up, LYDIA PRIM and KIMBERLY S will raise the roof at the Museum of Science & Industry with a special performance by SAUCI BERNAISE to spice up the night. Afterwards, CROBAR will welcome back SUSAN MORABITO, who many say is at the top of her game, and EXCALIBUR will feature the energetic sounds of ROLAND BELMARES.

Finishing off the weekend, Chicago’s top local talent will be center stage in a spectacular DJ Showcase at CROBAR on Monday, February 16th, organized by Chris Eterno, featuring MARK VALLESE, Michael Serafini, Freddie Bain, Greg Haus, JUNGLE JORGE SUAREZ, LIGHTNING LU LU and KEN-E.
