AFA: Coulter and Beck have deserted the culture war

Conservative Christian group concerned right-wing pundits have become too cozy with gays

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter and Fox News host Glenn Beck are in trouble with Mississippi-based American Family Association (AFA), a conservative Christian group, for liking gays too much.

In a blog post the AFA's Bryan Fischer says Coulter and Beck are "the latest deserters in the culture war and in the battle for sexual normalcy."

Coulter has earned the wrath of AFA for headlining Homocon, a Sept. 25th event organized by gay Republican group GOProud.

She was also unceremoniously kicked off the bill for WorldNetDaily's Taking America Back Conference in Miami for the same reason.

Despite the conference snub, Coulter will continue to write a column for the far right-wing WorldNetDaily.

Beck was singled out because he "completely and shamelessly surrendered on the issue of gay marriage, and did so on Bill O'Reilly's program, only the most watched cable news program in all TV land. "

Beck, a recent Mormon convert, told his surprised counterpart that gay marriage is not a threat to America. "Honestly, I think we have bigger fish to fry," said Beck.

According to MediaMatters.org, Beck has previously said marriage equality was a slippery slope to polyamorous marriage, allowing siblings to marry, and really all about attacking churches.

Some political pundits say Coulter and Beck signify a growing shift by younger conservatives to be more libertarian toward social issues, including gay-rights.

"Many conservatives are able to take the leap from wanting the government to stay out of their economic lives to wanting the government out of their personal lives," writes Mark Whittington on AssociatedContent.com. "Telling gays that they cannot marry one another seems to many young righties to be an intrusion into private life."
