Liz Cheney says she was wrong on marriage equality; promises to defend it

She borrowed her sister-in-law's argument in 2013, freedom means freedom for everybody
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) says she was on the wrong side of history, wrong in her opposition to marriage equality. She is now promising to defend it as she faces a challenge from the Trump-backed far right of the Republican Party in her 2022 re-election fight.
Cheney, one of the fiercest critics of President Donald Trump and impeachment supporter, admitted to CBS News' 60 Minutes that her stance did split her family. Her sister Mary is an out lesbian married to Heather Poe.
Cheney said she was misguided on the issue and has learned.
"I was wrong, I was wrong," she said. "It's a very personal issue and very personal for my family. I believe that my dad was right, and my sister and I have had that conversation."
She repeated her sister-in-law's argument in 2013, "Freedom means freedom for everybody."
Cheney is under attack by Trump and his supporters for voting to impeach the former president. House Republicans even stripped her of her leadership posts to appease Trump.
After the January 6 insurrection, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Cheney as vice chair of the nine-person committee investigating the event.
Trump is endorsing Harriet Hageman in the 2022 Wyoming Republican primary.
Despite her support of marriage equality, Cheney is still an opponent of many Democratic priorities like expanding social programming and increasing spending to pay for it, increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans as a way of increasing government revenue, and expanding pro-climate programs that move America away from oil-dependence.
