The annual Gallup poll of "Values and Beliefs" finds that for the first time, more than 50 percent of Americans find gay relationships "morally acceptable."

43 percent now call gay and lesbian relationships "morally wrong." That is the lowest percentage in the ten years that Gallup has been surveying the public on this issue.

Overall, Americans have been gradually more accepting of gay relationships, although Gallup found the most dramatic change among men under 50.

In 2006, 42 percent of men ages 18-49 said they considered gay relationships morally acceptable. This year, that number is now 62 percent.

There has also been 16-point jump in acceptance among Catholics, nearly three times the increase seen among Protestants.

36 percent of Americans say gays are born that way, while 37 percent say homosexuality is caused by outside factors.

The Gallup poll is based on a landline and cell phone survey of more than 1,000 adults during early May.
