Called Jesus a "super intelligent gay man"

Egypt - Elton John's May 18 concert in Egypt has been canceled after he talked to Parade Magazine about gay issues.

John told Parade he considers Jesus a "super-intelligent gay man."

This is problematic for some followers of Islam, who consider Jesus a prophet.

The so-called "Egyptian Musicians Union" forced the cancellation of the May 18 concert, which was sponsored by UAE telecommunications firm Etisalat and was supposed to be in front of a private audience.

The union has the final say on every foreigner who wants to perform in Egypt.

"How do we allow a gay who wants to ban religions, claimed that prophet Eissa [Jesus] was gay, and calls for Middle Eastern countries to allow gays to have sexual freedom," Mounir El Wassimi, the head of the Egyptian Musicians Union, said.

In the same interview with Parade, John also pointed out the dangers of being an openly gay man in the Middle East.

"Try being a gay woman in the Middle East -- you're as good as dead," he said.
