Harry Caray’s Tavern heats up with Animal House rivalry

The patio of Harry Caray's Tavern on Navy Pier warmed up with a double event celebrating a German-based tradition and the legacy of Harold Ramis on February 2. Beginning at 3 p.m., a ceremony was held for longtime fans of Ramis' films Groundhog Day and Animal House. This was the third annual gathering for Harold Ramis Day and his spirit was alive on the lake that day.

The story of a television weatherman with a sci-fi scenario of waking up repeatedly on Groundhog Day, originally released in 1993, still resonates today. Past attendees have included actor Bill Murray and Chicago Harry returned in 2026 to look for his shadow, signifying six more cold weeks or not seeing it would predict a shorter winter.

This year, the focus was on the cast of National Lampoon's Animal House, led by Tim Matheson as Master of Ceremonies. He was joined by James Widdoes, Peter Riegert, Mark Metcalf and Martha Smith.

James Daughton played Greg Marmalard in the classic comedy and said how much he enjoyed being reunited with the cast, “When we are together, it is old home week. We were a tight ensemble. Even though there was the Omega and Delta house rivalry, I knew we were kidding. [laughs] We always share great stories at these celebrations and I love that.”

Richard Henzel brought his iconic voice in Groundhog Day to announce the commencement of the festivities at the podium. Each cast member was introduced and given a short amount of time to deliver dialogue from the movie or make general comments at the microphone. Unique costume pieces, special props and memorable quotes from Animal House added to the toga party held at the restaurant that afternoon. After a toast, a tasty “Eat Me” cake was sliced up for spectators to devour at the end of the program.

While there were conflicting stories concerning groundhogs earlier in the morning, Chicago Harry did not see his shadow at the Tavern. This left high hopes for an early spring to those in the Windy City who have experienced a tumultuous winter so far.
