Drive-Away Dolls revs up on representation

Ethan Cohen brings neo-noir style to a queer storyline for Drive-Away Dolls this February. Audiences are treated to a film that hits all the right comedic notes in a concise running time of 83 minutes. Two young lesbians embark on a road trip to Tallahassee in what Thelma & Louise could have been if made in 2024, not 1991. This adventure sets a tone from the beginning that will have viewers chuckling all the way to the end thanks to a strong cast of original characters.

No matter the size of the role, each player seems dedicated to participating and adding to this quirky project.

Margaret Qualley serves up a southern fried accent as Jamie an experienced mentor for Marian played by Geraldine Viswanathan who is in the process of navigating the relationship world. It's a human story taking place at the same time as a Three Stooges police investigation across the United States. The script is a commentary on how divided America still is in terms of politics, religion and sexuality.

Beanie Feldstein's reactions as Sukie are comedy gold as she steals every scene with gusto as a butch powerhouse set out for revenge against her ex.

Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon and Miley Cyrus all have small roles but shine in their own way. Damon perusing phalluses in one memorable scene will possibly haunt him for the rest of his career.

Director Ethan Cohen enlists his wife Tricia Cooke instead of his brother to assist him with the screenplay. The film was a long time in the making after being announced with the title Drive-Away Dykes back in 2007. The pandemic gave the duo time to develop the endeavor further and the results are worth the wait.

From visually striking raindrops to a stop at the She Shed, Drive-Away Dolls wastes no time in its 83 minutes in conveying a concise, cartoon-like comedy. The jokes speed by so fast that viewers will want to see this flick more than once to catch all the hilarious hijinks.
