Chicago Magic Lounge, 5050 N. Clark Street, is located in the Andersonville area of Chicago. The outside appearance is a bit deceiving thanks to a well-placed trick on the exterior. It's all part of the fun when guests arrive to see close-up magic performed at the Lounge.

Ticket holders are encouraged to come early as the bar may eventually fill to capacity and the environment will prepare people for what is in store for them. There is an after-show in the bar as well, so keep that in mind when planning the evening.

After being shuttered during the pandemic, the Magic team is back in action with protocols of vaccination cards required at the door and mask-wearing enforced for patrons unless eating or drinking.

The seating is not the most conducive to social distancing as it was arranged before COVID hit and is difficult to navigate in the cozy space around the stage. There's a full cocktail menu to order from and upscale food offerings as well, complete with shareable plates.

While you are waiting for the show to begin there are tricks performed right at your table by wandering magicians. Luis Carreon is among them and one of my past interviews. Prepare to be astounded by him!

The headliner, and now artist in residence, is starting a new act called Nick Diffatte: Offbeat. He has been featured on Disney cruises, in Las Vegas and on The Late Late Show. He is focused more on the comedy aspect in his act, but his magic tricks flow nicely throughout the set.

Diffatte plays off the audience and brings several members onstage to assist him. Who needs to pay a traditional magician's assistant when people will do it for free? He uses the awkwardness of a situation to drum up laughs from those around him and it pays off big time. Not everyone can be as naturally funny as this and have strong enough improvisational skills to keep the show flowing. There's metaphorical tight rope walking that occurs every time he performs Offbeat and for this, he should be admired.

He is not afraid to make fun of himself as well as those around him in a world that can get offended easily. He does this in a professional manner in a polished performance that locals will enjoy.

The show is not child recommended, so leave the kiddies at home for what will surely be an enjoyable night out on the town for adults. The running time is perfect and the additional pre and post magic shows will leave audiences satisfied. Tickets are a bargain to begin at $40 and can be purchased online at ChicagoMagicLounge.com or by calling 312-366-4500.

Diffatte and the gang offer some much-needed entertainment to this part of town so plan your visit before they disappear!
