This is the first monthly column by popular Chicago dermatologist Omeed Memar, M.D. Dr. Memar’s practice focuses on good skin care for the LGBT community. Dr. Memar has just launched a campaign called "Age Well, Live Well" designed specifically for the LGBT community. In the coming months Dr. Memar will help debunk the myths about achieving good skin – from holistic approaches to cosmetic procedures. If you have any questions submit them via ChicagoPride.com and Dr. Memar will address them in future columns.

If you are seeking to look youthful, my list of "super foods" below can help. My general rule of thumb to maintain healthy skin is "feed it and don’t hurt it." In order to maintain new skin, nail and hair growth your skin needs plenty of protein and water. Also, you know it, but I have to say it – stop smoking and sunning! Skin damaging and premature aging are caused by free-radicals. Sun and smoking and natural aging all release free-radicals. Anti-oxidants, on the other hand, a group of compounds protect the body and skin from damage caused by free-radicals.

This month's tips:

1. To maintain normal skin, nails and hair, at least 50 grams of protein is needed daily. If you cannot get it through food, a protein bar or drink works well. My favorite is Isopure protein powder. Even for the normal maintenance needs of your skin, be sure to take a regular multi-vitamin, even a Centrum one-a-day.

2. Make sure you have enough water (at least 7 glasses a day), and if you are physically active, drink more. Dehydration makes the skin look older and more susceptible to free-radical damage.

3. To avoid skin damage from free-radicals, incorporate the super foods in your diet.

1. pomegranate
2. blueberries
3. kale
4. spinach
5. raspberries
6. sweet potatoes
7. flax seed oil
8. green tea
9. salmon, caviar, or sardines (but watch out for excessive salt in these foods)

E-mail me your questions. See you next month!
