Searching for America's next drag superstar is never easy and now a whole race begins with season seven. RuPaul's Drag Race on Logo continues to grow in popularity on the Logo Channel.
Revving up this time is New York candidate Miss Fame. First taking on the modeling world then moving into makeup has not been an easy road.
We dialed the dame who was caught in the middle of working it.
Jerry Nunn: Hi, Miss Fame, good to track you down.
Miss Fame: I was just at a fitting.
JN: I don't know how you do it.
MF: I don't either. I need to clear my head.
JN: Your life is about to get crazier.
MF: I guess this is what I wanted right?
JN: I remember Adore Delano told me from last season she just wanted the new cast to start so it would die down.
MF: I can understand that and it hasn't even started yet! The volume up expectations and attention is so much. The opportunity and platform has been a dream of mine for a lifetime. I wanted to be inspiring and help other people who have had difficulties and didn't have it easy, the people that have had to work their ass off to make something. That is my whole purpose. People may look at me and think there is no way I have had to struggle because of how Miss Fame looks but my journey to this point was far from easy. I am taking this chance to really be human beyond the persona. I can't wait to be more influential and uplifting to the community. I think we need more advocates and more support. That is important for me but in the meantime we need to show up, be creative, look gorgeous, and be on for camera so that is the other side. I want to have a memorable impact.
JN: You are originally from New York?
MF: I'm from Templeton, which is in Central California. I grew up on a farm where I had hundreds of chickens and all of the barnyard animals you would expect. I would show them in the fair and wear my little 4-H uniform. I was snatching trophies when I was a wee lad or a little girl!
That was my life. It was surreal and gritty, far from anything I have experienced today.
JN: Was it a conscious decision to go glamorous?
MF: I have always been obsessed with shiny things. I would watch Wheel of Fortune with Vanna White who wore big earrings and had shiny white teeth. I saw that at a very young age so there was something about that. I felt like my life was supposed to be glamorous and sparkly. I felt that was my story even though I was working outside, building fences, and feeding cows. I let me life evolve and I learned hair. I moved to San Francisco to model as a boy and do runway shows. I was edgy having tattoos and a mohawk. I was told to go to Europe or New York with that look. I met Mike Ruiz at a fashion show and he asked me to do a shoot with him. I made a conscious decision to move to New York after that.
JN: Where did you learn makeup?
MF: I have been drawing portraits since I was kid. I did faces and flowers. I sold art in the beginning when I was working in salons doing hair. When I moved to New York I had a galleries worth of work and used that to help me pay my rent. I got hired at MAC Cosmetics. I was a club kid at the same time where I would wear crazy outfits. I was very androgynous. I was still a boy and untucked. I wore makeup but when I started working for MAC I learned more about it
