"What is it now?" Eddy asked, cursing herself for not letting the phone go to voicemail.

"I think I fucked up your grandma's recipe," Ben said on the other end, his voice edged with frustration.

"Ben, it's shepherd's pie. How the fuck do you fuck up shepherd's pie?"

"Was I supposed to use actual shepherd?"

"Har."

"Ok, but seriously, this can't be right. You mix biscuit mix with the potatoes?"

"And make a crust out of it. Like a pie."

"It's not how it comes when I order it at Wilde's."

"Look, you wanted Chuck's favorite meal, so there it is. Shepherd's pie like grandma made."

"It just looks weird. All yellow and stuff."

"Are you saying our grandma is weird?"

"No! No, that's not... "

"Because you're lucky that his favorite meal is from our English side. God help you if you had to make some weird Asian thing from our mom's side."

"I just want it to be perfect, you know? It's our second monthiversary."

"Stop making up words."

"And my cooking skills or lack thereof have definitely been the downfall of many attempts at an adult relationship."

"You sure it isn't your adorable spaztasticness?"

"Har."

"It'll be perfect cuz you tried. Chuck will appreciate that more than anything. Trust me."

"Alright, but if this comes out all weird and doughy... "

"Then I'll give you my mom's recipe for dinaguan."

"Um... gesundheit?"

"I thought you had rounds tonight."

"Surprise!" Ben said, greeting him with a kiss. "Happy monthiversary."

"Aw, babe, that's so sweet. Is that... ?"

"Your grandma's shepherd's pie."

"That is so... " Charlie inspected the casserole dish for a moment. "Looks all weird and doughy."

The end is nigh, thought Ben. Charlie gave him another kiss.

"It's just like grandma made it.
