President Barack Obama Monday became the first president ever to make mention of gay rights in an inaugural speech when he vowed to fight for equal rights for "our gay brothers and sisters."

Illinois Senator Heather Steans, the sponsor of a gay marriage bill in the Senate, believes the prospect of legalizing such unions in the upcoming session is "great."

In responding to President Barack Obama's call in his inaugural address for gay marriage, the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a Christian conservative group working to derail an effort to make Illinois the 10th state to approve marriage equality, argued that gay men and lesbians are simply refusing to participate in marriage.

A high school senior's coming out speech at Princeton High School in New Jersey was greeted with a standing ovation.

For the second year in a row, Windy City Times, Chicago's weekly LGBT newspaper, has received a nomination from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The category they are in also has nominations for The New York Times and The Boston Globe.

The menu for the Equality Illinois 2013 Justice for All Gala on February 9 is a collaboration between celebrity chef Art Smith, the gala co-chair with his husband Jesus Salgueiro, and the Hilton Chicago.
