Northalsted’s 14 pride-themed crosswalks were completed in May 2019 just in time for Pride Month and the 50th Anniversary of the historic Stonewall Inn riots that launched the LGBTQ pride movement.

Thirteen of the crosswalks feature the rainbow design on the one-mile stretch of North Halsted from Aldine north to Bradley, excluding Addison. The 14th crosswalk at Melrose and Halsted is dedicated to the transgender community with the inclusion of the blue, pink and white stripes found on the transgender flag.

The $60,000 project was funded with money donated during Chicago Pride Fest and Northalsted Market Days, according to the Northalsted Business Alliance.

Together they make up the longest rainbow crosswalk installation in the world.

Since the installation, residents and visitors began posting photos with the colorful crosswalks to social media. The picture above, posted in 2019, is the Scarlet Bar staff giving the iconic Beatle’s Abbey Road album cover a bit of rainbow flair.
