Sounds from a Big Room

Chicago, IL - Jumping right onto the dance floor, let’s hear some vocals! Annie Lennox unleashes “1,000 Beautiful Things” (BMG) with Gabriel & Dresden creating a cute Techfunk Mix. Friburn & Urik lend their coaching skills to Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter”, delivering a one-two punch of dramatic synths and hard beats. Seal’s latest track, “Waiting For You” (Warner Bros) features mixes by 29 Palms and Thick Dick, who always delivers grittier mixes for those darker corners of the dance floor (come on… who doesn’t like Thick Dick…?) Junior Vasquez provides his standard fare of mixes with Beyonce’s new track, “Baby Boy” (Columbia). Upcoming items of note are Monica’s next track, “Get It Off”, remixed by That Kid Chris, and Suzanne Palmer has teamed with Angel Moraes to produce “Help Me”, which is sure to help fans waiting for the release of her full length album on Star 69 Records.

Jessica Simpson & Junior Vasquez…. Diva squared? Ummm, not so much. Junior’s mixes of “Sweetest Sin” are about as appealing on the dance floor as watching Mz. Simpson pout through another episode of the reality show on MTV with Jessica and her hunky hubby. Junior’s mix is loads of drama but no beats for the first two minutes! Too bad that an episode of “The Newlyweds” is much longer than two minutes…

Madonna & Britney & Peter Rauhofer…. Diva cubed? Now you’re talking! For those in NY, run to the Roxy this weekend to hear Peter premiere his take on the recent teaming of Madonna & Britney, “Me Against the Music” (Jive Records). Also listen for Rauhofer’s remixes of Madonna’s latest release “Nobody Knows Me” (Warner Bros), “Into The Hollywood Groove” and “Nothing Fails” (which was recently remixed by Tracy Young). Just so Madonna wouldn’t feel starved for attention, Ralphi Rosario also sent her some love by lending his distinctive anthem flavor to “Love Profusion” which made the dance floor explode during its premiere at Hydrate a few weeks ago. Word is that the big M wants the track (and Ralphi’s mix) to be released as a single.

Hoxton Whores? Is that a nickname for the gay rodeo? No but this remixing team have been taking dance floors on a wild ride by picking tracks from my early years and mashing them up with funky grooves, big house sounds and tribal beats. You’ve heard their take on The Fog’s “Been A Long Time”… look for their recent mixes of De’Lacy’s “Hideaway”, The Difference’s “Djum Djum” and “Reach” by Judy Cheeks. Also notable is the Hoxton Whores mix of “If You Fall” by Ad Finem (Azuli).

The music’s getting darker as the hour grows late so that’s progress through the club to the darker corners. First up is Evolved’s “A Matter of Time” (Baroque), the haunting, dark synth track from Mike Mucci. Next is Palm Spring’s “Palm Spring” (OceanTrax), with Bini & Martini delivering big beats, horns and some funk. For the Spanish tribal feel of Chus & Ceballos, look no further than Volume 2 of Del Gado’s “Coffee Beats” (Fluential) which wakes you up with galloping percussions tinged with Latin flavor. More tribal beats mixed with some vibe can be heard in Wally Lopez’ track, “The Vibe” (Weekend Records) with David Ferrero adding synths to the blend in his mix.

Angelo Kortez should cause quite a stir with “Scandalous”, his latest release available on white label. Norty Cotto continues his streak of fierce mixes, as shown in the explosive track, “I Feel It” by Fetish 69 (Cutting Records). Meanwhile, Lula and her spooky voice are back and will turn many heads with “My Empire”, another tech-house hit from Star 69. Fans of “Bucci Bag” should listen for a similar sound in Baggy Bukkaddor’s “VIP” (Sonic City), blending quirky spoken vocals with fast synth beats.

Let’s head to the sound of those house beats coming from the lounge so that we can chill before exiting the club. Junior Jack gives Whitney’s “Fine” a make-over with his thumping Disco mix and a housy Deep mix that will get you moving. Listen for Deep Influence’s take on “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” which brings more substance and less anthem to Mariah’s latest hit. Robbie Rivera’s filtered house sound is captured well in his mixes of “So In Love” by Billy Paul Williams (Kriztal). Those who like Lee Cabrera’s Latin house flavor should listen to his mix of “Stars” by Morjac feat. Raz Conway (Credence) while fans of Who Da Funk should pick up their latest track with Cindy Torres, “Radio” (Subusa).

watch for… Several full length albums from popular artists are slated for release this fall, providing many original tracks that are ripe for remixing into dance floor tracks in months ahead. Worth mentioning are Kristine W’s return to clubland with her album, Fly Again (Tommy Boy) and Kevin Aviance’s full length album, Entity (Emerge). Also of note are Aretha Franklin’s So Damn Happy (Arista) and Dido’s Life for Rent (Arista), which includes the original of “White Flag”, recently remixed for the dance floor.

have you heard…? Another label has fallen. Hooj Choons, the UK provider of 136 house tracks over the past 13 years, has closed its doors for financial reasons. Rather than observing a moment of silence, give them a proper tribute by dusting off one of their classic tracks and grooving to the beat.

track of the week… Murk – Believe (Tommy Boy)
Believe me… this track is HUGE!!! The original 12” mix can be found on the vinyl double pack of Murk’s upcoming full length LP. However, it’s the Rosabel mixes that will rush this tune to the dance floor. The trademark big room sounds of Ralphi and Abel lift this track to new heights and there’s plenty of vocal to please the masses, even in the dub! Only limited promo copies available for now so grab one if you can….
