Chicago, IL - Gay entertainment weekly, Gay Chicago Magazine, has expanded its coverage of local LGBT news as the future of the Chicago Free Press remains in question.

Despite employee upheaval and financial struggles, publisher David Costanzo says the Chicago Free Press has not ceased publication at this time. Sources tell ChicagoPride.com the future of the newsweekly grows increasingly uncertain.

Seeing an opportunity to reach a larger readership, Gay Chicago Magazine owner Craig Gernhardt has increased the magazine's local LGBT news coverage. Known primarily for nightlife and entertainment coverage, Gay Chicago has introduced "Gay Chicago Newswatch" written by former Free Press news editor Gary Barlow.

I'm personally looking forward to the New Year," says Gernhardt. "We're starting out very strong.

Gernhardt says to expect even more news coverage in GCM. "But make no mistake; we're not going to stop covering the nightlife and entertainment. That's our bread and butter. Jonathan Lewis, our editor, is doing a great job covering movies, music and stage."

According to Gernhardt, former Chicago Free Press Editor-in-Chief Matt Simonette and Senior Writer Amy Wooten have agreed to join his publication.

"We're also endorsing political candidates for the first time," says Gernhardt. "The Endorsement Issue will hit the streets January 21st."

Despite a bad year for national LGBT media outlets and print media in general, Gernhardt isn't ready to concede. "Print isn't dead," he says. "We've seen so many publications come and go over the years. Gay Life. Babble. Gab. We've been down this road before - and we've held our own."

Gay Chicago Magazine was founded in 1976 by Gernhardt's father, the late Ralph Paul Gernhardt.

"I'm hoping my dad would be proud of the job I'm doing with his legacy," concludes Gernhardt.
