Sarah Paulson, Lily Tomlin, Tituss Burgess and RuPaul are among the out artists nominated for an Emmy Award on Thursday.
Amazon's Transparent, about a transgender woman who comes out to her family in her 70s, received numerous nominations, including an acting nomination for its star, Jeffrey Tambor, and a directing nomination for its creator, Jill Soloway. Bradley Whitford, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann and Melora Hardin also received nominations in acting categories.
Sarah Paulson received acting nominations for her work on The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and American Horror Story: Hotel, two Ryan Murphy productions. Murphy, who is raising two sons with his husband, earned a directing nomination for an episode of The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
Lily Tomlin, who married her longtime partner on the last day of 2013 after 42 years together, was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role opposite Jane Fonda in the Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie.
Another Netflix original series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, helped Tituss Burgess secure his first Emmy nomination. Burgess' portrayal of the flamboyant Titus Andromedon earned him a nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category.
Three openly gay nominees – Jane Lynch (Hollywood Game Night), Tim Gunn (Project Runway) and RuPaul Charles (RuPaul's Drag Race) – are competing in the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program category.
Other out nominees include an acting nomination for Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), a writing nomination for Tig Notaro (Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted) and a directing nomination for Ellen Page (Gaycation).
