More Pro-Jock Homophobia

New York City - In the latest example of homophobia in professional sports, New York Giants' tight end Jeremy Shockey is quoted as calling Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells a "homo".

In next week's New York magazine, Shockey criticizes Parcells for comments he was told the coach made about him on TV and concludes by saying: "Let's see how much Parcells wins this year. I'll make him pay when we play them. The homo."

Shockey claims he did not make the remark, but writer Chris Smith a ten year veteran with the magazine says he has Shockey's complete interview on tape, including the slur.

New York magazine spokesperson Serena Torrey said Friday the magazine stands by the story and Smith.

The object of his attack is not free of making his own anti-gay remarks. Parcells once called Dallas Cowboys wide receive Terry Glenn a "she''.

GLAAD spokesperson Cathy Renna said that she was not surprised. "It's a reflection that it's still OK to use that language in sports. He's done it before. In some ways, it's no surprise to us."

Last September Shockey made inflammatory remarks about gays on the Howard Stern radio show.

A year ago former Greenbay Packer Esera Tuaolo came out in a television interview describing years of living in fear he would be outed and told of rampant homophobia in the NFL.

In April, Colorado Rockies reliever Todd Jones caused a furor saying gay players should not be allowed in major league baseball.

"I wouldn't want a gay guy being around me," Jones told the Denver Post. (365gay.com story)

In 1999 John Rocker, then with the Atlanta Braves attacked gays, people with AIDS and immigrants in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
