Chicago, IL -
Walmart said Friday it plans to shutter 269 stores this year, including the small-format Express stores in Lakeview and River North.
The big-box retailer had been testing the Express concept since 2011 as a way to reach a different kind of shopper in urban markets.
"The "small box" urban experiment failed," Chicago Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) tweeted Friday morning.
The 14,800 square feet Lakeview store at 3636 N. Broadway, in Chicago's Boystown neighborhood, opened in 2011. The location marked Walmart's inroad into one of Chicago's most affluent and predominantly gay North Side neighborhoods.
The River North location opened in 2012 at 225 W. Chicago Ave.
According to DNAInfo, the two Chicago locations will close at 7 p.m. Sunday. 110 employees will be affected.
