The national pet store will soon occupy more than half of the retail space at the new Boystown apartment tower.

Chicago, IL - Pet supplies and services retailer PetSmart is officially confirmed as the first store slated to occupy commercial space at Boystown's new Halsted Flats development, according to the developer and city construction permits.

PetSmart, Inc. will fill nearly 6,000-square-feet of space at 3740 N. Halsted St. on the corner of West Bradley Street. That's more than half of the 10,900-square-feet of retail space available at Halsted Flats, with two other spaces still available on Halsted.

New city permits issued in late June vaguely detail renovations at the space, with this phase of the construction process estimated to cost $148,000. Harlem Irving Companies, the developer, also lists PetSmart as the location's flagship store.

"We are thrilled to welcome a new business to the street and look forward to continued growth and development," Northalsted Business Alliance spokesperson Jennifer Gordon told ChicagoPride.com. "There's definitely an excitement among members and neighbors, particularly those with pets, about the opening."

Gondon says the construction timeline and expected grand opening date are still unclear, and representatives with PetSmart, Inc. told ChicagoPride.com there is no additional information available on the store at the time. Details about the location are also not listed on the store's upcoming grand openings website.

Tenants for the two other retail locations next to the new PetSmart still remain a mystery. One vacant location houses roughly 3,500 square feet, and the other 1,305 square feet. The 15-story building has parking for 276 cars is on the basement, first, and second floors, and is in the heart of a highly trafficked pedestrian area in Boystown.
