DIRECTV next week will premiere a documentary on the life of actor George Takei.
To Be Takei premiered to wide acclaim at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
The film, directed by Jennifer Kroot (It Came From Kuchar), takes a look at Takei's journey from spending part of his childhood in a World War II internment camp to manning the helm of the Starship Enterprise. After publicly coming out gay in 2005, Takei married his partner Brad Altman in California and went on to become an LGBT rights advocate.
After its July 3 premiere, To Be Takei will run exclusively on DIRECTV through August 5.
"We are thrilled that our friends at DIRECTV share our enthusiasm for Jennifer's incredible movie," Mara Winokur, senior vice president at Stars Digital, which acquired the film's North American distribution rights, said in a statement. "We could not ask for a better partner to launch the film to homes nationwide."
The film opens in limited release on Friday, August 22. It will also be available the same day on iTunes and other VOD sites.
