Kirk Cameron: Fornicators, adulterers bigger threat to marriage than gays

Kirk Cameron, an outspoken opponent of gay marriage, has said that the institution has bigger threats.

Roughly two years ago, Cameron, who came to prominence playing Mike Seaver on the 80s sitcom Growing Pains, was widely criticized for saying that being gay is "unnatural" and "detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization."

Cameron was promoted as a "champion of marriage" by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the nation's most vociferous opponent of marriage equality.

"When people get too focused on redefining marriage, you're distracted from the bigger problem – fornicators and adulterers," Cameron told AL.com this week.

"If the people sitting in the pews are fornicators and adulterers, the church will destroy marriages much more quickly than those outside the church. When God's people mock marriage, God doesn't take that lightly."

"I think the greatest threat to marriage is not other people's definition of marriage. The church isn't taking God's definition of marriage seriously. It's not other people sabotaging marriage that's the problem," he added.
