Chicago, IL -
Ok, so I was told I have to behave and put in this disclaimer because I got some "phone calls" about last week's column. For those of you numb enough not to have noticed, I put a gag paragraph of mixes in last week's column. "What paragraph?" you ask? I'll give you a hint: Rosabel mixes of Frank Sinatra? GET REAL!!!!! Speaking of the ROS part of ABEL, Columbia records is shelving Ralphi's mix of "Notte Di Luce" by international singer Mario Frangulis (no, this is not a gag). But they are releasing Junior's Mix of it, which really sucks because Ralphi's mix is superior. Victor Calderone will be releasing his new mix compilation next month called "Resonate". Two original Victor productions will be on this CD; "Resonate" and "Deep Dark Jungle". I hear Jim Lewis Mix CD's are really hot right now……pick one up if you haven't. New on Hooj Choons Records is a release by Echomen called "Thru 2 You". Never heard of the Echomen? They also go by names such as Mooncat and Lexicon Avenue. Who knew? The Bushwacka mixes are supposed to be da shit. Orchun & Gokhan's new cut "Nymph" on Empire State Records is hot progressive dirty fisting music. It's supposedly getting a lot of play in NY and is one of Victor Calderone's favorite benders right now. Remember Dead or Alive? You will. They are supposedly releasing a new CD compilation with new mixes of "You Spin Me Round"(gag? Maybe…..but not in a good way) Yoshitoshi delivers a retouch of the "Baguio Track" by Chus and Ceballos. Haven't heard these mixes yet, but I'm skeptical. Love that song……love those re-mixers too….but I think it's time to put this track to bed too. Alcatraz is also releasing "Giv Me Luv" with That Kid Chris Re-mixes on Yoshitoshi this month.
I picked up a track by The Begginers a while back called "History". I have to give it a mention because I heard it 3 times this past weekend and apparently it's picking up steam. Bini and Martini toss the salad on that track. A redux of the Serious Intention classic "You Don't Know" has been done by House re-mixer Joeski (Maya Records). This track is from the early 80's House era and is sampled heavily in Ceevox's "Don't Leave Me This Way". Last issue I mentioned an E.P. by Dr Kucho called "The Shadow Troopers". The flip side has a track called "Belmondo Rulez" that is way hot. It has no vocal, but a build that tops any track currently in circulation. Kucho also gives us "The Playboy Interviews" on Weekend Records. Way cute and tribal, listen closely for the words in the background. DIRTY! Speaking of dirty, another hot bender out this week is We Groove's "Sex Girl". George Morel and Shawn Rudnick break out the Crisco and plastic gloves for this filthy track. I haven't really been crazy about many Subliminal Records releases in a while, but they have redeemed themselves with Sergio Serrano & Berni Villanueva's new release "Give Me Your Gucci". Wally Lopez shines on his dub mix with this cut. DJ Escape and Guido's new label Just 2 Exist has released their first record, but it's not new. The old Praxis anthem "Turn Me Out" with vocals by Kathy Brown is the tune at hand. What is new is the Guido mix, which breathes new life into this hit. Deborah Cox's "Play The Part" (J Records) is finally out in pre-release, but it's not the Hex mixes getting the attention this time: Gabriel & Dresden knock this one out of the park kids. Jewel releases a set of mixes to her new track "Intuition" on Atlantic Records. The makeover on this tune is done by Gabriel & Dresden and Todd Terry. Tunes to watch out for next time? - New Sandy B, Monica, Inaya Day, Tina Anne, and Sugar Ray just to name a few.
