British Olympic diver Tom Daley has revealed he is in a gay relationship during an emotional new YouTube video recorded for his fans.
"Right now I'm dating a guy and I couldn't be happier," Daley said in the video published Dec. 2. "It feels right and people are going to have their own opinions, is it a big deal? I don't think so. People will call me a liar. I wanted to say something. I am ready and I wanted to do it."
There has long been speculation over Daley's sexuality, but he's refused to open up about it before now. Earlier this year he brushed off rumors that he is gay, insisting that he'd come out if he were.
"I think it's funny when people say I'm gay...I laugh it off," Daley told the UK Sun Mirror in October.
In the new video clip titled "Something I want to say... ", the 19-year-old diver explained why now was the time for him to come out.
"Now I feel ready to talk about my relationships," Daley said. "In spring of this year my life changed when I met someone and made me feel so safe and happy and that someone is a guy. It took me by surprise. It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen. But it just clicked in my head."
He added: "Of course I still fancy girls but right now I'm dating a guy and I couldn't be happier."
As for making the announcement in a YouTube video, Daley said, "I didn't want to get my words twisted. I wanted to put an end to all the rumors and speculation.
"I'm still Tom. I still want to win an Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 for Great Britain. I'm still as motivated as ever to do that."
Daley won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
