Washington, DC - If you are planning on taking a trip to Washington D.C, or if you are just fortunate enough to live in the nations capital, there is a new stop on your gay tour that is right up any sports enthusiasts' alley. This month Nellie's Sports Bar opened it's doors and welcomed some new life into D.C. fading gay bar scene.

As sports bars go, the ironically named Nellie's promises to be more than just a few bar stools and a 30 inch television. The owners have spent more than a year remodeling and community marketing to make sure that this specialty bar is ready for clientele.

The bar is located in a historic photography studio at the corner of 9th and U Streets NW, which lends to the atmospheric nature. With vaulted ceilings, two floors of space, a huge outside deck, and television screens lining the walls, it will be a great place to meet up and catch the game, no matter what the sport. Even the bathrooms have been finished to perfection with sinks from D.C.'s old Griffith Stadium, which was the former home of the Washington Senators baseball team.

The bar is owned by local fundraiser Doug Schantz and restaurateur Rocio Anzola, who felt like that the addition of a sports bar is exactly what the DC gay night life scene needed.

"At Nellie's, our goal is to be a great spot for friends to gather, relax, and enjoy a few drinks and some excellent food," Schantz said about his new bar.

The impressive menu includes a few standard nighttime snacks like quesadillas, ribs and wings, but there are also some less standard items to spice things up. Interesting morsels like seafood bisque, mac and cheese fritters, and crab pretzels add a little heir of sophistication to the joint.

The bar will be a great place for gay athletes to come and have a great meal and will hold parties, and charity events that will hopefully increase awareness and interest in local gay sports teams.
