Cory Monteith was a fierce gay ally
Actor Cory Monteith, star in the television series Glee, was found dead in a Vancouver, Canada, hotel room over the weekend. He was 31.
Monteith was found Saturday afternoon at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel whe staff went to check on him after his missed his check out time. The cause of death has not been determined.
Born in Calgary, Canada, Monteith began his acting career in Vancouver, and was cast as Finn Hudson, the heart throb quarterback who reluctantly joins the glee club, on the Fox hit musical series when it debuted in 2009.
That same year, the relatively unknown Monteith told ChicagoPride.com, "What hasn't been the biggest adjustment for me on this show. It's been a huge learning curve for me. I've never sung."
He went on to become the breakout star of Glee.
Monteith has spoken to People magazine about his lifelong battle with substance abuse, which he said started at the age of 13. Earlier this year, Monteith admitted himself into a facility for substance addiction. He was released in April.
Monteith had been a strong advocate for gay rights. Last year, he hosted the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York with Glee co-star Naya Rivera. His favorite charities included The Trevor Porject and Straight But Not Narrow.
