Clarksdale, Mississippi - Authorities have charged a 22-year-old man with the murder of Marco McMillian an openly-gay African-American mayoral candidate for the city of Clarksdale, Mississippi.

The body of McMillian, 34, was found Wednesday morning near the Mississippi River.

Lawrence Reed, a 22-year-old from Clarksdale, was charged in the death of McMillian according to the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.

The search for McMillian began after his SUV collided head-on with another vehicle on Tuesday morning. Reed was driving the SUV and McMillian was not in the vehicle.

Reed was transported to a Memphis hospital and will be extradited to Mississippi once he is released.

Jarod Keith, McMillian's campaign spokesperson, remembered McMillian as "a bold and passionate public servant, whose faith informed every aspect of his life."

The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund tweeted: "Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Marco McMillian, one of the 1st viable openly #LGBT candidates in Mississippi."

Keith told ABC News Radio he did not think McMillian's death was a hate crime.
