Chicago, IL -
A 25-year-old Hammond man was sentenced to three years in prison Tuesday after being convicted of stabbing another man during a 2010 Boystown brawl that was caught on tape.
Darren Hayes was convicted on Nov. 19 of aggravated battery. Hayes was arrested days after a July 4, 2010 altercation on North Halsted Street near the corner of Aldine Avenue. A video of the fight, recorded by a neighbor, was posted to YouTube and re-circulated on the "Take Back Boystown" Facebook page.
The video (posted below) stirred outrage in the North Side neighborhood, which is the central hub to Chicago's LGBT community, and lead to a racially-charged July 6, 2010 CAPS meeting on neighborhood violence and loitering.
Police credited the video, which shows the victim being punched and kicked by nearly a dozen men, and social networking sites like Facebook for assisting in the arrest.
Cook County prosecutors said the victim was walking on Halsted Street with two friends when Hayes and a group of eight to 10 individuals passed and something was said, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.
The victim was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center and was later released.
