Designer Nate Berkus says once he came out gay, he never went back.

The 41-year-old Berkus appeared on cabler Current's Joy Behar: Say Anything to pitch his new book, The Things That Matter.

Berkus told Behar that he knew he was different at an early age.

"My mother didn't know," Berkus said. "She made me play baseball. I had no desire to do that. I said, 'Mom, I don't like direct sunlight, I don't like bugs, I don't like grass, and I'd rather be in the house playing with your fabric samples.'"

But it wouldn't be until college that Berkus came out.

"Once I came out, I never went back," he said. "Most people come out when they are leaving for something, like Thanksgiving. 'Thanks for the turkey, I'm gay, see you later!'"

Berkus' new line of home products hits Target shelves on Sunday, October 21.
