New information released by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) on Friday reveals that GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney secretly donated money to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) in an effort to impede the progress of gay marriage.
Never before seen
financial documents obtained by HRC reveal that Mitt Romney donated $10,000 to the National Organization for Marriage in 2008.
"It's clear now that Romney was a major financial donor to Prop. 8," said Fred Sainz, HRC's vice president for communications. "But it's also clear that his campaign very cleverly hid this contribution in an obscure Alabama PAC."
Romney's objection to same-sex marriage is no secret, but critics contend he chose to give to NOM, an organization that has a history of shielding its donors.
The donation was made through the Alabama chapter of the Free and Strong America PAC, the same group which it was revealed earlier this week plotted to turn blacks and gays against one another.
Alabama is often used to funnel campaign contributions since the state does not put a limit on the individual amount that a donor can give to a PAC.
