Charlotte, N.C. - Democratic 2012 Party Convention Chairman Antonio Villaraigosa said on Wednesday that he would support a gay marriage plank in the party's platform.

"I believe in family values and I believe that we all ought to be able to have a family and marry if you want to. I don't think the government should be in that business of denying people the fundamental right to marry," he told Politico.

However, President Obama's re-election campaign manager Jim Messina says not so fast.

"There is a process to go through this discussion," Messina told the Daily Caller.

He refused to commit to gay marriage one way or the other. President Obama himself has been criticized by some for not pushing gay marriage on a national level.

"We're the big tent party… we have a great record on fighting for fundamental fairness for all," Messina said.

The Democratic National Convention will be held Sept. 3-6 at Time Warner Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
