Washington, D.C. - Following the announcement late last fall that a character on Fox television’s The Simpsons would come out of the closet this season, an Internet gambling company has started taking bets on who the gay one is.

"Fan websites are running rampant with speculation that the mystery gay character could be any one of the animated sitcom stars,” Mike Foreman, spokesperson for BetUS.com, told the Casino City Times.

According to Zap2It, BetUS.com is placing Bart’s friend Milhouse in third behind 4 to 1 odds that the gay character is Smithers. The odds on favorite, with 4 to 5 odds, is Marge’s sister Patty.

Marge’s other sister Selma and Homer’s nuclear technician friend Lenny also make the list.

Patty has never found love, even fleetingly, in the show’s 16 season run.

Fans of the show speculate that the outing will come as part of a bigger plot involving the legalization of same-sex marriage in the Simpson’s home town of Springfield.
