Twice divorced Newt Gingrich opposes same-sex marriage in fight over ‘sanctity of marriage’

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, a favorite among social conservatives for his opposition to same-sex marriage, reportedly asked his ex-wife for an "open marriage."

Newt's second wife, Marianne Gingrich, tells ABC News that he asked her to "share" him with former House aid and current wife, Callista Gingrich, with whom he was having an affair.

"He was asking to have an open marriage and I refused," said Marianne Gingrich in an exclusive two-hour interview by ABC's Brian Ross to be aired on Nightline tonight.

According to ABC News, Marianne Gingrich will say her former husband lacks the moral character to be president.

She also said that her then-husband's affair took place while he was leading the House impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton for his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Appearing on NBC's Today Show on Thursday morning, Gingrich said, "Intruding into family things that are more than a decade old is simply wrong."

Gingrich divorced his first wife as she was being treated for cancer.

The 68-year-old Republican candidate continues to portray himself as the socially conservative alternative to GOP front-runner Mitt Romney.

Ironically Gingrich explains his opposition to same-sex marriage as necessary to protect the sanctity of marriage.
