Des Moines, Iowa - Desperate Republican candidates are hoping that painting Mitt Romney as gay-friendly will sink him in Iowa.

The caucus is Jan. 3.

The candidates and their PACs will spend more than $12 million on commercials through next Tuesday, reported the Associated Press. Romney and his supporters will account for $3.7 million of that total.

Longshot Rick Santorum -- whose anti-gay vendettas cost him control of his Google presence years ago -- told voters that Romney has "sort of gotten a pass on gay marriage."

The other candidates were clinging to labels.

"I am the only consistent conservative," said Michele Bachmann.

"I've been a conservative my whole life," said Newt Gingrich.

But Romney?

He is a "Massachusetts moderate who campaigned to the left of Ted Kennedy," Gingrich said.
