Hollywood - Two leading gay groups want ABC to drop the new sitcom "Work It" before it even premieres on Jan. 3.

The sitcom features two men who cross-dress like women to get jobs.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said it sends a signal that transgender people are "something to be laughed at."

"The timing couldn't be worse for a show based on the notion that men dressed as women are inherently funny," said GLAAD Associate Director of Entertainment Media Matt Kane. "Shows like this have the power to put the transgender community in an even more dangerous position."

GLAAD and other groups are also not happy about an ad campaign for "Work It" which depicts the two male characters in female clothing at urinals.

The Transgender Law Center said that images like that make it hard for transgender people to gain full equality.

"This show will be seen by millions of viewers nationwide, and the icky promotions are already in full swing," said Mark Daniel Snyder of the Transgender Law Center.
