New York, NY -
Madame Tussaud's New York, flagship U.S. location for the world renowned wax museum, celebrated its grand opening with a star-studded gala event on November 15th. The event, hosted by Tony Bennett, welcomed celebrities ranging from Governor George Pataki to Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani to RuPaul to Donald Trump.
For more than 200 years, Madame Tussaud's has been entertaining and educating millions of people with its signature wax portraits and now will showcase nearly 200 masterfully crafted, lifelike figures of New York's notable "movers and shakers," along with world celebrities and historical leaders.
The 85,000 square foot, five story, Times Square opening featured a "magic moment" on 42nd Street (which was closed in part for the event) consisting of an unveiling of host Bennett's wax figure, the introduction of celebrity guests who have figures featured in the museum, a pyrotechnics display and the official lighting of the Madame Tussaud's marquee. Guests were also treated to the museum's five themed interactive environments including a behind the scenes tour of the meticulous and artistic process involved in the creation of the wax portraits.
Following the ceremonies, the evening was topped off with a black-tie VIP party among the wax figures and other celebrity guests including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Maya Angelou, Katie Couric, Evander Holyfield, Huey, Barbara Lazaroff, Dan Rather, Al Roker, Liz Smith, Patrick Stewart, Ivana Trump, and many more.
