Chicago, IL - Chicago White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckman apologized Saturday for making a 'gay' joke earlier this week.

The Chicago Sun-Times first reported the incident where Beckman scratched "GETZ IS GAY! GB" in the dirt during a game with the Kansas City Royals on Monday. The message was directed at Kansas City Royals second baseman Chris Getz.

"Obviously it was meant as a joke but obviously it was in the wrong place and I didn't mean it that way," Beckman told ESPN Chicago. "I will just try to move on."

The Beckman apology comes shortly after incidents by Chicago Bulls' Joakim Noah and LA Lakers' Kobe Bryant.

Bryant directed a gay slur toward a referee in April and was fined $100,000. Noah used a gay toward a fan during the NBA Playoffs in May. He was fined $50,000.

"I'm disappointed,' White Sox general manager Kenny Williams told the Sun-Times.
