Celebrate Family Pride in Saugatuck In July

Wed. May 19, 2004 12:00 AM

Saugatuck, MI - Families from all over the world will gather in Saugatuck for Family Week, a weeklong conference and family adventure July 17-24. Family Week is a week filled with opportunities to celebrate your family and make connections with other families just like (or just as different as) yours! Family Week is jam-packed with fun family activities, including beach picnics, family dances, kite flying, sandcastle building, campfires, workshops and much, much more!

New to this year's Family Week we are hosting a daylong Mini-Conference "Building A Family". This conference is for persons interested in becoming parents. Prospective parents can join us at our annual Registration and Scavenger Hunt Kick-Off on Saturday afternoon. Then they can join us at our first official event, Sunset Social at the Beach. On Sunday July 18th there will be workshops and panel discussions we feel are issues, questions all prospective parents will be asking. Stick around afterwards to go berry picking with us at our Berry Picking, Ice Cream Social Hayride event. We finish Sunday off with an evening workshop entitled, "Daddy & Papa" An in-depth look at Dads raising children together.

Every year, the Family Pride Coalition provides a safe and vibrant place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) parents and their children to gather from all over the country. It is an idyllic opportunity for our children to meet other children with LGBT parents, and for parents to meet other parents and share experiences. Because every family has different needs, several activities are planned for each day - your families' schedule can be as full of activities or as relaxed as you choose.

The Family Pride Coalition has invited COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) back for another year of exciting programming for youth nine years and older. Workshops, activities and events focus on allowing youth ages 9 and older to meet other kids with LGBT parents, share their experiences - both good and bad, get peer support around the challenges and triumphs in your life, and just plain relax without having to keep secrets, hear anti-gay jokes, or answer all those crazy questions you hear about your family. COLAGE's week-long, high-quality social, recreational and educational programming is led by COLAGE staff-- http://www.colage.org/a professional team of adults who also have LGBT parents who serve both as peers and role models, camp counselors and friends.

Registration is now available on the Family Pride Coalition's website at http://www.familypride.org/events.htm (Once on the page, be sure to scroll through our event listings to Family Week 2004).
