Washington, D.C. - A new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that for the first time, a clear majority of Americans support the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Five years ago, support was at 36 percent. It's now at 53 percent.

The Post said that gay marriage opponents think the poll is skewed because of the way the question was asked: "Do you think it should be legal or illegal for gay and lesbian couples to get married?" Opponents said that makes it sound like gays and lesbians will get thrown in jail if they do something "illegal."

The Washington Post said that they've used the same question in every poll.

The telephone poll of 1,000 adults was conducted in mid-March, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.
