Eligible voters must register by 5 p.m. tonight; early voting ends Thursday

Chicago, IL - Today is the deadline set by the Board of Elections for Chicago residents to register to vote in the February 22 Municipal General Election which includes the race to succeed Mayor Richard M. Daley, who ends his 21-year career as one of the nation's most gay-friendly mayors.

Those registered to vote before today will be allowed to cast an early vote through Thursday, Feb. 17, or to vote at their standard polling place on Election Day.

Any U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age can register to vote in person today by 5 p.m. at the Chicago Board of Elections, 69 W. Washington St., Sixth Floor.

Early voting for the 2011 Municipal General Election ends Thursday. Voters can cast their vote at any of the 51 Chicago sites regardless of where they live. All locations are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every ward in Chicago has shown an increase in the number of registered voters.

The Sun-Times reports that wards in which African Americans are the biggest voting bloc had the largest increase in registered voters. Latino wards saw the smallest increase.

The three African American candidates, Carol Moseley Braun, Danny Davis and James Meeks, all had well-organized voter registration drives.

The most recent poll in the race, released Tuesday by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, shows Emanuel leading the pack with 58 percent support of likely voters. Chico has pulled ahead into second place - with 24 percent - while del Valle and Braun follow with 10 and 6 percent respectively. If no candidate is able to surpass 50 percent support in Tuesday's election, there will be a two-candidate runoff vote on April 12.
