Chicago, IL - Lambda Legal and Equality Illinois have launched a new online registry that will help LGBT Illinois residents navigate the new civil union system.

Residents will be able to enter civil unions starting on June 1.

In a press release, Lambda Legal said that people in other states who have entered civil unions have sometimes still had problems having their legal rights recognized.

Civil unions insure a broad range of rights, including hospital visitation rights, right to inherit even if the deceased didn't leave a will, and right to access spousal health insurance benefits provided by employers.

Couples who sign up for the tracker will have access to Lambda Legal's advice. The data gathered from these couples will also allow the group to identify hot spots of problems (for example, if a certain jurisdiction is being obstructive).

To sign up, go to LambdaLegal.org.
